2020 Spring Seminar Cancelled

March 9, 2020

Dear Colleagues,

The Massachusetts Association of Blood Banks was in the final steps of preparing for the 48th Annual Spring Seminar to be held on Tuesday April 7 and Wednesday April 8, 2020.  The program was completed, exhibitors and sponsors were secured, and attendee registration was under way.

Last week, several employees of a local company were diagnosed with COVID-19 (previously called novel Coronavirus) after attending a national corporate meeting in the Boston area.  As a result, both Partners Healthcare and Beth Israel Lahey Health, two of the state’s largest healthcare networks, released new policies prohibiting employees from attending group meetings and educational seminars, including local events.

Because of these new policies, several of our planned speakers have had to cancel their involvement in our Seminar.  Likewise, multiple members of our Board, including myself, are now prohibited from attending the Seminar by our employers.  This will also seriously impact the number of attendees at our event.

Based on this series of events, and the likelihood of other area healthcare facilities restricting or prohibiting attendance of educational seminars, we have had to come to the disappointing decision as a Board to cancel the 48th Annual Spring Seminar.

Attendees who have already registered will be reimbursed the cost of their registration in full.

Exhibitor registration fees and sponsorships will be reimbursed in full.  Each exhibitor/sponsor will be contacted to determine the best way to accomplish this.

We are hopeful that these attendance restrictions will be lifted, or at least loosened, in time for our 5th Annual Fall Meeting, tentatively planned for early-November 2020.

Thank you for your continued support.
